Miscellaneous TopicsMINORSYou may be able to select a minor and have it listed on your permanent record. Minors must be officially approved and listed in the UTK catalog. Such minors are available in Business Administration, several departments in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and several departments on the College of Arts and Sciences. Some courses required for a minor may also satisfy degree requrements in your major. However, selection of a minor will likely require that you take additional courses beyond those requred for your major. You must declare your intention to complete a minor at the time you complete the application for a degree, if you wish the minor to be listed on your transcript. Degree applications are handled by the Admissions and Records office. A brief partial list of available minors is given below. The number of hours required for the minor is also listed. Since some of these courses may have prerequisites, the actual number of required hours may be greater than the number listed. You should discuss any planned minor with your advisor as early as possible in your academic program. Please note that Envirnonmental and Soil Science majors cannot take this as a minor
CORRESPONDENCE COURSES Coursework by correspondence, at UTK, is available until graduation; but only six semester hours may be taken in the last academic year. Correspondence courses are handled by the Independent Studies Office, 420 Communications Building (Phone 4-5135). Registration forms are available in the independent studies catalogs available from that office. Students must complete the form and obtain approval of their college dean before registering for correspondence courses. READMISSIONS Students who have been dismissed due to poor academic performance and students who have been away from UTK during Fall or Spring semesters (other than coop students) and taken courses at another institution must be readmitted. Students dismissed due to poor academic performance must normally wait one semester before applying for readmission; however, the dismissal may be appealed immediately by writing a letter. A handwritten letter is acceptable. Readmission applications by students who have been away from UTK (other than summer term) and taken courses at other schools will be processed only after all transcripts (they must be official - no copies or faxed copies) have been received. This can create a problem if the last semester at another school ends only a short time before readmission to UTK. Contact for readmission questions is the Readmissions Office, 320 Student Services, Phone 974-2184. TRANSFER If you transfer from another school (or another major) you may have some courses that cannot be counted toward degree requirements. We will work with you to make appropriate substitutions, but we must comply with university and ABET accreditation requirements in evaluating substitutions. COMPUTER USE All students are expected to be computer literate. You will be expected to use computers in many of your courses. Many UT courses not have an online component that you can access from a home computer. Become familiar with the UT computing resources as quickly as possible. You should also establish an account in the CASNR computer laboratory, located in room AE 276. If you need assistance, check with your advisor or an instructor in the department. SENIOR STANDING Students should apply for senior standing approximately two semesters before their expected graduation date. Application may be made any time after the completion of 90 semester hours. Admissions and Records will complete a senior standing form listing courses taken and courses remaining. This is the official record and may be used plan future courses and identify necessary substitutions. Use this important planning tool. |
