The College of Agriculture Student Council held its monthly meeting on Thursday, January 17, 2002.  President Lisa White presided, and a quorum was present for the conduction of business.

            In old business, Lisa White discussed the CASNR Christmas party with the council.  The party was a success, and the council would like to thank Glenn Lafollette and the Christmas party committee for all their hard work.

            In new business, the dates for Open House have been set; they are April 12 and 13 from 9 am-4 pm.  Clubs are reminded to select their Open House representatives before the next meeting, which will be held on January 24 at 5:30 pm.  All representatives’ names and e-mail addresses should be submitted to Laura Moss at lmoss@utk.edu.

            Beginning this semester, the Awards Committee will begin selecting a Faculty of the Month along with the Student of the Month.  Criteria for nomination are as follows:

            -A letter from a student

            -A one-page list to include

                        -awards and honors

                        -leadership activities on campus

                        -research interests

                        -community involvement

These are to be submitted to Ella Brown at ebrown7@utk.edu, and are due the same date as the Student of the Month nominees. 

            The annual CASNR awards banquet is set for April 2 at 6 pm.  The minimum GPA for the Outstanding Student awards has been raised to a 2.7.  A new award, the Outstanding Staff award will be presented this year, to honor a member of the support staff.  Criteria for the Outstanding Faculty awards has changed slightly and is now as follows:

            -Teaching and Professional Honors and Awards

            -A one-page paper about the professor’s philosophy about teaching

            -A list of involvement with undergraduates, including club sponsorship

            -A one-page research summary

The criteria for Outstanding Advisor awards was also outlined.  They are, as follows:

            -A letter from a student

            -A list of advisees

            -A one-page paper on the professor’s philosophy of advising

            A representative from the Horticulture Society announced that the organization would be holding a Valentine’s Day flower sale on February 13 and 14 in the UC.  Everyone is encouraged to help the Hort Society in their fundraiser.

            The next Student Council meeting will be held on February 21.
