The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture
ANNUAL REPORTING FORM

Forbes Walker, Associate Professor
Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science
Annual Performance Period: January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007

A. SUMMARY AND IMPACTS.

1. Summary. Provide an overall summary (500 words or less) of your accomplishments during the reporting period.

This year I have drafted (or been on teams) that have drafted 5 grants to secure external funding for extension and applied research in watershed management and the development of international student programs in Jamaica, Thailand, Vietnam and Uganda. As principle investigator $241,500 in external funding was secured from grants and $139,315 as co-investigator.

During the year, I attended professional meetings around the state and in 3 states (SC, AR and LA). I co-authored one peer reviewed article, was author or co-author on 3 poster presentations at national meetings.

During the year I traveled to Guatemala twice and South Africa and Lesotho twice. In Guatemala I was one of three faculty mentors that accompanied a group of 10 students conducting a service project to build rainwater collection tanks. In Lesotho we developed and formalized linkages with the National University of Lesotho (NUL), resulting in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UT, Tennessee State University and NUL. We also conducted several workshops, seminars and field days at Universities, colleges and farmer organizations.

This year I served on the Departmental head search committee and became the agricultural and natural resources program leader in the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment on the main campus.

I was the major professor of Nick Ryan and Ryan Ragsdale, MS students in ESS both who successfully graduated in the Fall 2007.

2. Impacts. List up to three significant impacts of your program. Impact statements should be one to three sentences and should be written in a way that would be meaningful to the public.

1). I have played an active role in writing and coordinating the preparation of 4 grants for funding with colleagues from the University of Tennessee. Funding of $380,815 was secured.

2). Presented three posters presentations were made at national meetings, including the Soil Science Society of America annual meetings.

3). Work continued on the Pond Creek watershed improvement project. This project has secured additional external funding to support one full-time watershed coordinator as well as establish best management practices.

4). Work continued in Oostanaula Creek. This year the watershed management plan was approved by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. This will enable us to apply for grant funding to implement best management practices.

5). I continued to co-ordinate the development of a series of 32 fact sheets on best management practices (BMPs) to reduce losses of phosphorus from agriculture. The website hosting these fact sheets has recorded over 159,000 hits in the first 12 months of operation.

6). I assisted with the teaching and development of a new general education course on Soils and Civilizations (ESS 120). Approximately 89 students attended this course including many from outside UTIA. I also guest lectured in several other classes.

7). Advised producers and livestock groups across the state on the current state regulations regarding concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) regulations.

8). Increased University of Tennessee international outreach programs through the establishment and development of a collaborative partnership with National University of Lesotho (NUL) and Lesotho Ministry of Agriculture. This resulted in the signing of an MOU with NUL. In addition, accompanied 10 members of the UT Engineers without Borders chapter members to Guatemala, to conduct a service project to build rainwater harvesting structures.
