Amy Johnson, Assistant Professor Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science Annual Performance Period: January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007 A. SUMMARY AND IMPACTS. 1. Summary. Provide an overall summary (500 words or less) of your accomplishments during the reporting period. In the area of research, I co-authored one peer-reviewed manuscript that is currently in press and presented research at two national meetings. I developed collaborations with colleagues in the BESS department, other UTIA departments, and other land grant institutions that will lead to productive collaborative research. I obtained a graduate student to work on, and began, a project quantifying the likelihood of loss of phosphorus and pathogens to surface water from land application of dairy manure. I collected and analyzed soils from Guatemala to assess the efficacy of vegetable production systems to improve local villagers' nutrition. I continue to initiate a laboratory dedicated to, and develop a nationally recognized research program in, soil nutrient management. In the area of teaching, I developed and taught two courses, one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level. Additionally, I wrote an original course laboratory manual that will be used in subsequent courses. 2. Impacts. List up to three significant impacts of your program. Impact statements should be one to three sentences and should be written in a way that would be meaningful to the public. Developed and taught two courses (ESS 511 and ESS 334), including writing a new laboratory manual for ESS 334. Initiated and developed a laboratory dedicated to soil nutrient management, allowing research into the sustainable use of waste products, animal manures and commercial fertilizers to maximize crop productivity and minimize environmental degradation.
