The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture
ANNUAL REPORTING FORM

John Tyner, Assistant Professor
Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science
Annual Performance Period: January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006

A. SUMMARY AND IMPACTS.

1. Summary. Provide an overall summary (500 words or less) of your accomplishments during the reporting period.

Teaching:

I taught two undergraduate classes to a total of approximately 70 students. I also mentored the UT Fountain Wars student team to First Place overall and Most Innovative Design at the International ASABE meeting held at Portland, Oregon. Two undergraduates BSE students gained valuable experience conducting research for my programs during the summer semester.

Research and Funding:

I published 4 peer reviewed manuscripts (3 as the corresponding author) and submitted another 3 manuscripts that are in review. I submitted 8 grant proposals ($712,968), 6 as the lead author ($207,988). Three were funded ($8,105), and the remainder are pending.

2. Impacts. List up to three significant impacts of your program. Impact statements should be one to three sentences and should be written in a way that would be meaningful to the public.

We developed a rapid method to measure the permeability of soil. This type of test is commonly used to describe how easily water and air can move through a soil. Our new testing procedure allows measurements to be collected autonomously.

We developed an improved model to estimate the flowrate of leachate from animal waste holding ponds. Results suggests that the flowrate is nearly independent of soil type.

B. PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS (EXTENSION, RESEARCH AND TEACHING). As applicable, list title, names of participants (PIs, Leaders, Co-PIs, Co-leaders, Collaborators etc.), project number, sponsor, your role ( leader/co-leader/collaborator) and your percent effort on the project as stated in the project description or document.
