State 4-H Land Judging Event Held November 9



The state land judging contest was held in the Jackson area on November 9, 2009 at the West Tennessee Research and Education Center. Dr. Don Tyler of BESS coordinated the location of a challenging set of contest pits at the nearby Johnny Verell farm.

Teams participating included Cannon County, Carroll County, Carter County, Grainger County, Hawkins County, Henry County, Jefferson County, McNairy County (2), Rutherford County and Wilson County (2). The team from Jefferson County took top team honors with the McNairy County (A) team placing second. Jonathan Steele of the McNairy County (A) team was the high scoring individual.

An awards banquet following the contest was held at the West Tennessee Research and Education Center. The banquet guest speaker and honoree for the 2009 contest was Billy Vestal. Mr. Vestal served as chairman of the FFA land judging event for many years and worked with Richard Powell, Western Region Extension Program Leader to coordinate the West Tennessee contest.
