Department Name Change Reflects Expertise

On July 1, the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Environmental Science transitioned to a new name. The unit will now be called the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science (BESS). The new name makes clear the department's two primary disciplines and highlights soil science, which was not evident in the previous name.

The department has been characterized by outstanding grantsmanship efforts (over $4.2 M in external funding garnered in 2004), publications, and nationally recognized extension programming, thanks in part to cross-disciplinary efforts between departmental faculty. BESS extension faculty serve core constituencies through the development of innovative programs in critical areas such as precision farming, and through strengthening critical service elements such as the Soil Test Lab and Forage Test Lab.

The department's teaching programs regularly produce outstanding graduates, some of whom received national recognition for their scholarly activities. The quality of the departmental faculty was further demonstrated in 2004 by their appointment to Fellow (three awards) in national organizations, and by their receipt of national teaching awards.
