Southern Appalach. Science & Engineering Fair

Five members of the Biosystems Engineering & Environmental Science Department played a large part in the 2005 Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair (SASEF). Staffing the fair were Gary Lessman (Executive Director, third from left), Joanne Logan(Vice President and webmaster, not shown), and Julie Werner (Fair Manager, not shown). In addition, Doug Hayes and Paul Ayers served as two of the 120 judges.

About 30 schools and a number of homeschoolers participated in SASEF this year. Two hundred seventy-eight kids submitted projects; the top two individual winners and the team winner in senior division won scholarships and an expense-paid trip to the international science fair in Phoenix, Arizona in May. The fair was sponsored by UT-Battelle, Strata-G, and a number of other companies, individuals, and associations.

Project categories included biochemistry, behavioral and social science, chemistry, computer science, earth science, engineering, environmental science, medicine and health, microbiology, physics, and zoology.

SASEF is held annually in early April, in the U.T. arena. For more details about this year's competition, or entry requirements for next year, visit the SASEF web site at
