Luci Carleton Snags Safety Award

Luci Carleton (far left) was one of two runners-up in the "UT Safety Begins With You" Safety Contest, winning a $25 Gift Certificate to the UT Bookstore. Luci's suggestion was to make the new road that connects the back part of Lot 60 to Lot 67 behind BEES a one-way road downhill, as it is only one lane wide. The exit for Lot 67 would go under the new bridge. Currently the road is two-way, which is dangerous for both pedestrians and vehicles.

First place winner Lori Osburn of PSLS (second from right) won $100. Many people commented on the fact that vehicles speed on Center Drive on the Ag. Campus, trying to "make the lights" on Center Drive. This is dangerous for pedestrians. Lori won because she addressed the situation with a very effective solution. Her entry suggests changing the new traffic light at Center Drive & EJ Chapman Drive to run on a 4-way flashing schedule during the week, thereby making cars from every direction have to stop. During busy times, especially "rush hour," the lights can be on a regular timed schedule. It should be noted that some crosswalks suggested by other people will be painted.

Renee Follum of EPP (far right) was the other runner-up. Her suggestion was to continue the sidewalk on the side of Lot 66 that connects the greenhouses to the new buildings near the Trial Gardens. This will get pedestrians out of the bus and commuter traffic that travels on EJ Chapman Drive.

Mike Keel (second from left) announced the awards. There were over a dozen entries, with many good suggestions made. Congratulations to the winners, and a big "Thank you" to all who participated!
