SALARY AND BENEFITS
    Commensurate with experience and education.     The department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science includes 26 faculty members and 25 professionals and support staff. the Department offers undergraduate degrees in Biosystems Engineering, and Environmental and Soil Sciences, and a graduate programs in Biosystems Engineering, Biosystems Engineering Technology, and Environmental and Soil Sciences. Departmental programs encompass the full range of the Land Grant University mission - teaching, research, outreach, and service - and are administered by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station, and University of Tennessee Extension. The department works closely with the College of Engineering in its engineering-related teaching pursuits.

JOB DESCRIPTION The Department Head position is a 12-month appointment that provides leadership to develop and deliver nationally and internationally recognized programs in teaching, research, Extension, and service and provide leadership for a program of activities that meets the needs of eligible clientele regardless of race, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, religion or veteran status. This is to be achieved by:
  • Interacting with faculty and external constituencies to determine direction and priorities;
  • Recruiting and hiring outstanding faculty and staff;
  • Planning and conducting annual performance reviews with departmental faculty and staff in a timely fashion;
  • Retaining, motivating, and strengthening faculty and staff through active engagement, mentoring, and professional development programs;:
  • Supporting and providing leadership to maintain the excellence of the departmental teaching programs and success in accreditation, both academic and professional.Recruiting, counseling and advising students majoring in the disciplines;
  • Representing the Department to external constituencies (including alumni, agricultural industries, state and federal agencies, and professional organizations), other faculty and administration within the University ,colleagues at other universities and institutions, and the constituency supporting the University;
  • Enhancing the visibility of the Department within the University by promoting the creative achievements and advocating departmental expertise for new and collaborative opportunities within the Institute and University. Identifying applications of departmental expertise for national initiatives; and
  • Creating an environment that fosters diversity, collegiality, teamwork, and the ability to work multicultural and multi-disciplinary settings.
Administer necessary infrastructure and support for departmental programs by:
  • Providing fiscal management of federal and state funds, grants and contracts, and income from gifts and fees;
  • Supervising clerical and supporting personnel;
  • Managing departmental physical facilities and planning for space and equipment needs; and
  • Enhancing resources by identifying and facilitating the acquisition of funding support for departmental programs and initiatives including the cultivation of philanthropic gifts.

REQUIREMENTS The successful candidate must qualify for the rank of professor in the Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science with an earned doctoral degree in Biosystems/agricultural engineering, or soil science, or other closely related field. In addition, the candidate must have the following:
  • Evidence of exceptional academic achievements including extramural funding, as well as the demonstration of effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Experience with teaching, research, and/or Extension programs at a land grant university, and understanding of and commitment to excellence for all three functions;
  • Experience in assessing priorities and adapting to a changing environment with creativity and innovation;
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining and expanding diversity and knowledge of equal employment opportunity and affirmative actions, in the department and university community.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multidisciplinary environment.
